[00:00:12] STATION ID: [KLAA LOS ANGELES — THE VOICE OF THE HALOS — STAND BY FOR BASEBALL]

[00:00:28] HALLIDAY: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and a warm Southern California hello to you from the press box high above Angel Stadium in Anaheim! Your correspondent is Howard “Hap” Halliday, and on this bright Sunday afternoon — eighty-three degrees, the sun up there like somebody nailed it to the ceiling, barely a breath of wind, two miles an hour and calling it a day — we have twenty-seven thousand, seven hundred and twelve paying customers filing into the big ballyard for an early-April ball game.

[00:01:00] HALLIDAY: A first-week meeting between two West Coast clubs, friends, and I’ll tell you — the Halos come in at five and five, even-steven out of the gate, and the Mariners from up Seattle-way sit at four-and-six and looking to scratch a win before heading home. That’s the story in the standings — but you know as well as I do that in April, every ball game is a town-hall meeting on what kind of summer a club’s going to have. Let’s see what these fellows have to say.

[00:02:00] HALLIDAY: On the hill for the home side, the right-hander George Klassen — taking the ball against Luis Castillo, the veteran from the Mariners’ staff. Castillo knows his business — he’ll come at ’em with that heavy sinker and the change of pace. Klassen, a young arm, has the assignment of keeping the Seattle sluggers off balance this April afternoon. A big day for both of them.

[00:03:00] HALLIDAY: The batting order for the visiting Mariners: Raley in right, Raleigh catching, Rodríguez in center, Naylor at first, Arozarena in left, Crawford at short, Young at second, Garver designated, Rivas at third. For the Halos — Neto at short, Trout in center, Schanuel at first, Soler designated, Candelario at third, Adell in right, Lowe in left, O’Hoppe catching, Frazier at the keystone. 2B

[00:03:30] SFX: [CROWD MURMUR, VENDORS CALLING, USHERS SHOWING THE LAST OF THE PATRONS TO THEIR ROWS]

[00:04:00] MUSIC: BAND — NATIONAL ANTHEM (ABBREVIATED ORGAN AND BRASS).

[00:05:40] SFX: [PLATE UMPIRE ADRIAN JOHNSON — “PLAY BALL!”]

[00:05:48] HALLIDAY: And there you have it, folks — the halo logo lit up behind the center field fountains, the big rock pile and the waterfall in full gush, and we are underway at Angel Stadium! First ball at one-oh-eight Pacific time.

▲ TOP 1ST — MARINERS BATTING · ANGELS PITCHING

[00:10:00] HALLIDAY: Leading off for Seattle, Luke Raley, the left-handed batsman. Klassen works from the stretch — no, he’s in the windup, nobody aboard. Here’s the first pitch of the ball game… Raley rips one on the ground, a sharp hopper down the right-field line — Jo Adell comes in on it and plays it on the short hop — but Raley is already motoring into second standing up! A double to start the afternoon, and the Mariners have the early say.

[00:10:26] HALLIDAY: Cal Raleigh, the switch-hitting backstop, steps in. Raley takes a walking lead off second. Klassen comes set… delivers… Raleigh chops it softly right back to the mound — Klassen gloves it on a bounce, a little soft-shoe over to Schanuel at first. One down. Raley, alert as a cat, tags and moves up to third on the out. That’s a heads-up base-runner, folks. GO

[00:11:14] HALLIDAY: Now the young star — Julio Rodríguez, center fielder, right-handed. Runner on third, one away. Klassen paints the outside corner for a strike — then a couple more — full count, three and two. Rodríguez cocks that bat… here’s the payoff pitch — Julio swings through it! Strike three! A breaking ball that fell off the table, and the Halos have two away. K

[00:14:03] HALLIDAY: Josh Naylor, the big first baseman, steps to the chalk. Klassen on the attack now. First pitch — Naylor gets under it, a high fly ball to straightaway center — Trout circles under the halo sunshine, camps, waits, squeezes. Three away. Raley stranded at third, no damage — Mariners come up empty despite the leadoff double. A fine wriggle by young Klassen. FO

▼ BOTTOM 1ST — ANGELS BATTING · MARINERS PITCHING

[00:16:48] HALLIDAY: Halo faithful on their feet as Zach Neto, the shortstop, steps in against the Mariners’ ace Luis Castillo. A sea of red caps out behind the dugout, a few of those rally monkeys getting an early wave. Castillo works… and Neto turns on one! A screaming line drive into the left-field corner — Arozarena races over to cut it off on one bounce — Neto motors in to second with a stand-up two-bagger! The ballpark is already buzzing. 2B

[00:17:35] HALLIDAY: Mike Trout — need I say more, friends. The captain of the club in the two-hole, runner on second, nobody down. Castillo, two-and-oh, three-and-two — a battle here. Payoff pitch… Trout drills it, a liner right up the middle — but caught! Rodríguez in dead-center catches it breast-high on the dead run! Just a terrific play. Neto tags and moves to third. One away. LO

[00:20:53] HALLIDAY: Nolan Schanuel, the young first baseman, lefty bat. Castillo gets ahead, oh-and-two. Schanuel then lifts a lazy fly out toward left — Arozarena drifts over under the afternoon sun, makes the grab in routine fashion. Two away. Runner still at third, waiting on his chance. FO

[00:22:15] HALLIDAY: Jorge Soler, the Cuban slugger, right-handed, designated hitter, two down, Neto ninety feet away. One-and-two the count. Castillo delivers… Soler burns a grounder to the left side — it’s a base hit! Arozarena charges, Neto scores on the play! The Halos strike first in this ball game! Mariners nothing, Angels one. The crowd lets out a roar and those Thunderstix over in the right-field pavilion start clapping like a picket-line rally. 1B

[00:23:45] HALLIDAY: Jeimer Candelario, the switch-hitter, steps in with Soler at first. Full count. Castillo back to work — Candelario chops it on the ground over to the first-base side — Naylor fields, takes it himself to the bag. Three away. Side retired — but the Halos draw first blood on an afternoon that’s shaping up just beautiful out here in Orange County. GO

▲ TOP 2ND — MARINERS BATTING · ANGELS PITCHING

[00:27:58] HALLIDAY: The sun sits high over the press box — not a cloud worth mentioning, a little heat shimmer coming off the turf in left-center. Randy Arozarena leads off the Seattle second. Klassen misses — ball one, ball two — fights back for a strike — and after a nine-pitch duel, ball four! Arozarena trots to first with a free pass. BB

[00:29:50] HALLIDAY: J.P. Crawford, the shortstop, left-handed. Runner at first, nobody down. Klassen bears down — strike one called, strike two swinging — and a fastball upstairs — Crawford chases, and he’s rung up! Two and three, a strikeout. One away. K

[00:32:01] HALLIDAY: Cole Young, the left-handed young second baseman, steps in. Full count here — and I should tell you, ladies and gentlemen, the Angels’ skipper came out of the dugout on that last pitch, asked for the cinematograph review — the electric umpire confab, they call it — and the call on the field has been overturned! Klassen’s pitch ruled ball four. Young takes his base. Arozarena moves up to second. BB

[00:34:01] HALLIDAY: Mitch Garver, the designated batter, right-handed, with runners at first and second. Klassen, now in a jam, works carefully — four straight off the plate, and Garver walks on four pitches! The bases loaded with but one away. Arozarena to third, Young to second, Garver strolls down to first. BB

[00:36:55] HALLIDAY: Leo Rivas, the infielder, batting with the sacks juiced and one down — tremendous spot here for the youngster. First pitch — Rivas lashes a line drive into center field! Trout comes in on it, it bounces in front of him — Arozarena scores, Young scores, Garver motors into second! A two-run single and the Mariners take the lead! Mariners two, Angels one. The crowd’s grown quiet, those fountains out yonder the only ones making noise. 1B

[00:38:08] HALLIDAY: Back to the top of the order — Luke Raley, runners at first and second, still but one away. Klassen has the long inning and is laboring. Two-and-two… Raley cuts at a breaking ball in the dirt — swinging strike three! Two gone. K

[00:40:38] HALLIDAY: Cal Raleigh walks up with the bases still occupied. Klassen nibbles — four balls, none near the plate — Raleigh flips the bat and takes his base. Bases loaded again! Garver to third, Rivas to second. Two away, but the Mariners keep piling on pressure. BB

[00:45:17] HALLIDAY: Rodríguez, already with a strikeout today, gets another chance. Two-and-two. Klassen comes set… Julio rifles a line drive toward left — Josh Lowe takes two hard steps, spears it at his chest! Third out! Klassen escapes further damage, but the Mariners take a two-to-one lead into the home half. The halo crowd clearing its throat now, rally monkey on the scoreboard doing his little dance to wake ’em up. LO

▼ BOTTOM 2ND — ANGELS BATTING · MARINERS PITCHING

[00:48:39] HALLIDAY: Jo Adell, the right fielder, leads off the Angels’ second against Castillo. The Mariners’ right-hander has his sinker working well. Count of two-and-two — Adell beats one into the ground, a routine chopper to Rivas at third, over to Naylor. One away. GO

[00:50:33] HALLIDAY: Josh Lowe in the two-hole, left-handed. Castillo works up and in. One-and-three — swinging strike three, Lowe waved at a fastball that had a little extra giddy-up on it! Two gone in a hurry. K

[00:52:57] HALLIDAY: Logan O’Hoppe, the catcher, right-handed hitter. Castillo behind three-and-one — grooves one — and O’Hoppe punches a hard grounder through the left side! A base hit! Arozarena plays it in. Runner at first, two away. 1B

[00:54:29] HALLIDAY: Adam Frazier, the veteran second baseman, left-handed bat. Oh-and-two the count. Castillo offers — Frazier slaps a line drive into right field, a base hit in front of Raley! O’Hoppe, running on contact, pulls up at second. Halos with runners at first and second, two down. 1B

[00:56:37] HALLIDAY: Back to the top — Zach Neto, two runners on, two away, the crowd back on its feet. Full count. Castillo fires — Neto swings through it! Strike three! A four-seamer on the outside half and the Mariners’ ace escapes the jam. End of two, Mariners two, Angels one. K

▲ TOP 3RD — MARINERS BATTING · ANGELS PITCHING

[01:01:09] HALLIDAY: Naylor opens the third for Seattle. First-pitch offering — and Naylor drops down a bunt! A surprise push down the third-base line — Klassen pounces on it, flips to Candelario, Candelario bobbles it! Everybody safe! Ruled a base hit, a little deflection on the exchange. Naylor at first, leading off, nobody down. Smart baseball. 1B

[01:01:42] HALLIDAY: Arozarena, again working the count. Three-and-two… ball four, high, and he trots to first! Runners at first and second, nobody away, Mariners fixing to add to their lead. Klassen is battling his control here in the third. BB

[01:04:40] HALLIDAY: Crawford up with two on, none down. Two-and-three. Klassen snaps off a good oneCrawford goes around and misses — strike three swinging! One away. The Halos take a breath. K

[01:06:20] HALLIDAY: Cole Young batting now, runners at first and second, one out. Two-and-two. Klassen delivers — Young connects, a deep fly ball to straightaway center — Trout goes back, back, at the track — catches it! A loud out, but an out. Tag up — Naylor moves to third, Arozarena hustles to second. Two away. FO

🔄 Pitching change — new pitcher: Ryan Zeferjahn

[01:12:19] HALLIDAY: The skipper’s had enough of Klassen. Out of the bullpen comes Ryan Zeferjahn — a fresh arm for the Halos, warmed up quick. He faces Mitch Garver with runners in scoring position. Three pitches — three strikes! Garver goes down swinging on a knee-buckler. The Halos are out of it! A tremendous cleanup job by the reliever. Still Mariners two, Angels one.

▼ BOTTOM 3RD — ANGELS BATTING · MARINERS PITCHING

[01:15:12] HALLIDAY: Mike Trout, the face of the franchise, leads off the Angel third. The crowd comes alive — that halo-shaped crown of hats bobbing up and down. Castillo gets to three-and-two — delivers — Trout crushes a line drive into the left-field corner! A rocket! Arozarena plays it on one hop off the wall — and Trout legs into second standing up! A leadoff double for the captain! K

[01:17:38] HALLIDAY: Schanuel, left-handed, runner on second, nobody down. One-and-oh… Schanuel scalds one to the right side — Naylor dives, knocks it down, picks it up, flips to Castillo covering! One away! Trout tags and takes third. A great play by Naylor to keep the ball in the infield — but Trout’s ninety feet away. GO

[01:18:48] HALLIDAY: Soler to the plate with the tying run on third. One-and-oh count. Castillo delivers — Soler drives a sharp grounder into right — a base hit! Trout jogs home with the tying run! Mariners two, Angels two. The halos all lit up! Soler stands on first, one away, ball game tied in the third. K

[01:20:29] HALLIDAY: Candelario, one away, Soler at first. Oh-and-one — Candelario rolls one over to second — Young fields, flips to Crawford at the bag — Soler in a walk, then Crawford fires to first — Candelario in by a step, too slow for the twin killing. One out, runner at second. Scratch that — the runner was erased, Soler out at second, Candelario safe at first. Two away, Soler erased on the fielder’s choice. Correction: Soler to second on the groundout, Candelario reaches. Let me catch my breath and call it clean — the official ruling: Candelario grounds out, second-to-first, Soler advances to second. Two away. BB

[01:21:14] HALLIDAY: Adell steps in. Castillo pitching with a runner on second, two away. Full count — and Adell chops at a fastball up — a foul tip, snagged by Raleigh! Strike three! Third out! Three even through three. LO

▲ TOP 4TH — MARINERS BATTING · ANGELS PITCHING

[01:26:02] HALLIDAY: Top of the fourth, the sun beginning its lazy slide westward over the grandstand roof, those palms beyond the right-field pavilion throwing their first real shadows of the afternoon. [03:22:16] HALLIDAY: Shaun Anderson, the big right-hander, comes on for the Halos in the tenth. And I should remind the listener — in this modern era, extras begin with the ghost runner — that’s Rodríguez, the automatic man on second, the rule the IBM-tabulator fellows cooked up to keep these things from running all night. Naylor up first, runner at second, nobody down.

THE FINAL OUT

[03:46:45] SFX: [CROWD — THUNDEROUS ROAR, WALK-OFF CELEBRATION, THUNDERSTIX CLAPPING, HALOS MOBBING SCHANUEL AND FRAZIER AT HOME PLATE]

[03:46:50] HALLIDAY: And there you have it, ladies and gentlemen — a walk-off sacrifice fly by Nolan Schanuel, Adam Frazier comes home from third, and your Los Angeles Angels defeat the Seattle Mariners eight to seven in eleven innings on this Sunday afternoon at Angel Stadium. Three hours and thirty-seven minutes of as wild a ball game as you’re ever likely to hear on a Sunday in April.

[03:47:10] HALLIDAY: The decisions — the winning pitcher, Shaun Anderson, who wiggled out of that bases-loaded jam in the top of the eleventh, now goes into the books with the victory. The losing pitcher, Gabe Speier, who surrendered the walk-off fly. No save on the ledger today — not the kind of ball game that calls for one.

[03:47:40] HALLIDAY: The stars of the afternoon, as your correspondent sees ’em: first star, young Cole Young of the Mariners, who hit a tremendous three-run wallop into the right-field seats in the fifth to give Seattle a lead they could not keep — but what a swing it was. Second star, Nolan Schanuel, who delivered the game-winner from eleven rows up — the sac fly that ended it. Third star, Jorge Soler, who knocked in the first Angel run of the afternoon with a base hit in the opening frame and sparked the Halos all day. HR

[03:48:15] HALLIDAY: A ball game with everything in it, friends — leadoff doubles, bunt singles, a run scored on a throwing error, back-to-back-to-back strikeouts from Zeferjahn in the fourth, a caught-stealing at second to end the ninth, a bases-loaded whiff to escape the eleventh, and a walk-off sac fly to end it. Eleven innings, eighteen runs between the two clubs, and twenty-seven thousand, seven hundred and twelve paying customers who got more than their money’s worth on a bright April afternoon in Orange County.

[03:48:50] HALLIDAY: The Halos climb back to even at six-and-five, the Mariners slide to four-and-six. A long summer ahead for both clubs — but today belongs to the home side. This is Howard “Hap” Halliday, high above Angel Stadium in Anaheim, saying so long, thanks for spending your Sunday afternoon with us, and may your own walk-off come soon and often. Good day, ladies and gentlemen, and good baseball.
