[00:00:00] MUSIC: PROGRAM OPEN — NBC CHIMES, THEN MARCH FANFARE, FADE UNDER.

[00:00:12] STATION ID: This is the NBC Red Network. You are tuned to Station WEAF, New York, six-six-oh on your dial, with affiliated stations from coast to coast bringing you tonight’s ball game direct by long-line from sunny Southern California. WEAF, New York.

[00:00:28] HALLIDAY: Good evening, friends, wherever the wire reaches you tonight — good evening from Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, where your reporter Howard “Hap” Halliday is perched high above home plate in the press box, a cup of clubhouse coffee at his elbow and a fresh scorecard pencilled in. It is a balmy seventy-four degrees, clear as a brand-new nickel, with a nine-mile breeze blowing out toward right field and carrying the smell of hot frankfurters and cut grass up into the rafters. The attendance board reads forty-four thousand five hundred and fifty-one — a genuine Friday-night mob, ladies and gentlemen, the big “A” sign out beyond the left-field stands lit up like a Christmas tree, and those tall California palms waving lazy behind the outfield fence.

[00:01:00] HALLIDAY: And what a storyline we have for you. The San Diego Padres come up the coast to Anaheim riding the top of their league at thirteen wins and seven losses — the class of the National circuit, if the standings boys have it straight — while the Halos of Anaheim sit a game over .500 at eleven and ten, looking to knock the front-runners back a peg on home cocoa-nut matting. This is interleague ball, friends, and the little fellow in the bleachers tells me the Rally Monkey is warmed up and the ThunderStix are stacked three high at every turnstile.

[00:02:00] HALLIDAY: On the bump for the home side, a right-hander named José Soriano — a big fellow out of the Dominican, working on a season earned-run figure that would make old Lefty Grove sit up and take notice. Zero point two eight, ladies and gentlemen, through his first starts — not a misprint. For the visitors, the knuckle-ball man Matt Waldron, a fellow who tries to float that thing up there so slow the batter falls asleep waiting — though the ledger shows he has been roughed up thus far, a fourteen-plus earned-run mark he is plainly hoping to scrub off tonight.

[00:03:00] HALLIDAY: The Padres send Cronenworth, Tatis Junior, Merrill, Machado, Bogaerts, Sheets, Castellanos, France, and Campusano to the batter’s box in that order. The Angels answer with Neto at short, the great Mike Trout in the middle garden, Schanuel at first base, Adell in right, Moncada at the hot corner, Peraza at the keystone, Lowe in right — pardon, left, my scorecard is crowded — O’Hoppe behind the dish, and Frazier rounding out the nine. K

[00:03:30] SFX: [CROWD MURMUR, USHERS]

[00:04:00] MUSIC: BAND — NATIONAL ANTHEM (ABBREVIATED).

[00:05:40] SFX: [PLATE UMPIRE — “PLAY BALL!”]

[00:05:48] HALLIDAY: Mike Muchlinski has his mask down, he points to the mound, and friends — we are underway from Anaheim!

▲ TOP 1ST — PADRES BATTING · ANGELS PITCHING

[00:10:00] HALLIDAY: Jake Cronenworth the leadoff man, left-handed stance, chokes up a quarter inch. Soriano rocks, delivers — a knee-bender for strike one. Waste pitch high, two and one — correction, two and two. Here’s the payoff — Cronenworth swings through it! That ball had something extra on it, folks; the catcher’s mitt sounded like a pistol shot. One away.

[00:11:32] HALLIDAY: Tatis Junior, the peacock of the San Diego outfit, steps in — that gold chain catching the big-A lights. Soriano comes set. Fastball, called strike. Curve missed, one and one. Junior lifts the next one — a lazy fly toward right field — Josh Lowe drifts under it, camps, and gathers it in like a bellhop taking a coat. Two away.

[00:13:04] HALLIDAY: Jackson Merrill, the young center fielder, steps up batting from the left side. Soriano goes right after him — fastball for strike one, breaker for strike two, and now the young man is in the soup. The pay-off pitch — got him! Merrill waves at a curve in the dirt. Side retired on three whiffs — a Dizzy Dean opener if ever I saw one. The crowd likes that plenty. K

▼ BOTTOM 1ST — ANGELS BATTING · PADRES PITCHING

[00:16:09] HALLIDAY: The halo glows on the scoreboard — zeros across — and here comes young Zach Neto to start things off. A palm frond behind right field sways in that Santa Ana breeze. Waldron floats the knuckler — ball one, two and one the count — Neto hoists one high to right, Tatis Junior under it, and he has it. One down. FO

[00:17:41] HALLIDAY: Mike Trout. Say the name in any dugout in the land and the infielders move back a step. One and one — Trout raps a grounder down the third-base line, Machado backhands it clean, a throw across the diamond — in time. Two gone. GO

[00:18:47] HALLIDAY: Nolan Schanuel, the tall first baseman, swinging left-handed, works the knuckler to two and two — and there’s a line drive into center! A base hit, the Angels have their first safety. Schanuel stands at first, dusts the uniform, tips the cap to the bench. 1B

[00:20:42] HALLIDAY: Jo Adell up, and on the very first offering he gets under it — a high pop into foul ground on the first-base side — Ty France circles, circles, and squeezes it near the Padres’ dugout. Side out. Nothing across in the first, ladies and gentlemen. PO

▲ TOP 2ND — PADRES BATTING · ANGELS PITCHING

[00:22:54] HALLIDAY: The sun is slipping behind the grandstand now — long shadows creeping across the infield from third toward first. Manny Machado digs in, takes Soriano to a full count — three and two — and then chops one at Moncada at third, who picks it clean and fires across. One down in the second. GO

[00:27:21] HALLIDAY: Xander Bogaerts, the old hand from Aruba — first-pitch strike, and then he raps a bouncer to the shortstop Neto, a short hop, a sure throw, and it’s two away. GO

[00:28:07] HALLIDAY: Gavin Sheets, a big left-handed swinger — one and oh — he lifts a towering fly to right, Lowe settles under it, and that retires the side in order. Soriano has breezed through two. FO

▼ BOTTOM 2ND — ANGELS BATTING · PADRES PITCHING

[00:30:42] HALLIDAY: Yoán Moncada, switch-hitter, stands in from the right side against the knuckle-baller. The count works to two and one, the stadium lights flicker on against the dusk — and here it comes — HR

[00:30:52] HALLIDAY: Moncada gets all of that one! High drive, deep to center field — back goes Merrill — to the track — looking up — AND THAT BALL IS GONE! Into the seats in straightaway center, a tape-measure poke by any honest reckoning! Yoán Moncada jogs around the bases, tips the helmet, touches them all — and the Angels draw first blood! Padres nothing, Angels one! FO

[00:31:30] SFX: [CROWD ROAR — THUNDERSTIX RATTLE]

[00:32:14] HALLIDAY: The Rally Monkey is on the big screen now, folks, hopping for all he’s worth. Peraza follows — raps a grounder to second, Cronenworth to France, one away. GO

[00:32:47] HALLIDAY: Josh Lowe, another left-handed stick — two and two — pops it into short right, Cronenworth backpedals and gloves it. Two gone. PO

[00:34:22] HALLIDAY: Logan O’Hoppe at the plate — three and one — Waldron’s knuckler does not knuckle — it sailsand it catches O’Hoppe on the ribs! The backstop grimaces, walks it off, takes his base. Two down, man on first. HBP

[00:35:51] HALLIDAY: Adam Frazier, left-handed, one ball two strikes — and here’s a ringing drive to right field! — Tatis Junior gives chase but that ball is down the line — 2B

[00:36:01] HALLIDAY: — it hops into the corner, O’Hoppe rounds second, he’s waved around third, he’ll score standing! And Frazier pulls into third base with a two-bagger that behaved like a rifle shot! Padres nothing, Angels two, and the young Mr. Frazier stands ninety feet away.

[00:38:53] HALLIDAY: Zach Neto back up to the dish, one and oh — and a base hit up the middle! A worm-burner past the diving Bogaerts, Merrill charges, the throw home — too late! Frazier scores standing! Three to nothing, your Angels. 1B

[00:39:53] HALLIDAY: Trout now, with a chance to pour it on — two and two, and Waldron gets him swinging on a knuckler that fluttered like a moth at a porch light. Side retired, but the damage is done. After two complete: Padres nothing, Angels three. K

▲ TOP 3RD — PADRES BATTING · ANGELS PITCHING

[00:46:00] HALLIDAY: The field lights are on in full now — that distinctive Anaheim glow spilling over the palms beyond the fence. Nick Castellanos steps in — oh and two in a hurry — and there’s the third strike, a hook that dove off the table. One away. K

[00:47:00] HALLIDAY: Ty France, the old Seattle hand, two and one — lines a clean single into left field, Frazier plays it on a hop. One on, one out. 1B

[00:48:49] HALLIDAY: Luis Campusano up — Soriano loses the strike zone, four straight outside the black, and Campusano takes his free pass. First and second, one away, and this is how trouble starts. BB

[00:50:32] HALLIDAY: Jake Cronenworth at the dish — two and one — taps one to the second baseman Peraza, who steps on the bag himself, throws — no, it’s a force at second, Neto covering, Campusano out, Cronenworth on at first. Two down, runners at the corners. FC

[00:53:06] HALLIDAY: Tatis Junior, big spot — Soriano falls behind three and one, battles back — full count now — and the pitch is outside! Ball four! The bases are loaded with two away, and Jackson Merrill steps up as the house holds its breath.

[00:56:41] HALLIDAY: Merrill on the first pitch — raps it to the second basemanPeraza shovels to Schanuel at first — got him! Soriano escapes the bases-loaded jam, unscathed! What a piece of pitching, friends — the young Dominican walks off the hill with his zero intact, and the halo crowd gives him the big hand he has earned. GO

▼ BOTTOM 3RD — ANGELS BATTING · PADRES PITCHING

[00:58:50] HALLIDAY: Schanuel up, one and one, lines a base knock to center — Merrill plays the hop. Leadoff man aboard. 1B

[00:59:49] HALLIDAY: Jo Adell, one and two — swings through a knuckler, one away, man on first. K

[01:01:35] HALLIDAY: Moncada, the man who started the fireworks, two and one — lifts a fly to straightaway center, Merrill gathers it in front of the four-oh-five sign. Two down. FO

[01:03:39] HALLIDAY: Peraza — one and oh — grounds one into left field for a base hit, Schanuel hustles into second. Two aboard, two out. 1B

[01:04:40] HALLIDAY: Josh Lowe at the dish — Waldron punches him out on three straight, the last one a knuckler that caught the outside corner. Side retired. Still three to nothing, your Angels. K

▲ TOP 4TH — PADRES BATTING · ANGELS PITCHING

[01:08:29] HALLIDAY: Machado works a full count — takes the three-two pitch, ball four called — but hold everything! — the backstop O’Hoppe has stepped out and tapped his mask — he is asking the electric umpire for a second look. The cinematograph review — if you can picture such a thing, friends — a photoelectric strike zone confirms it: strike three, called! Machado shakes his head, tosses the bat, trots back to the dugout. One away on the ruling.

[01:10:52] HALLIDAY: Bogaerts, two and one, lofts a fly to left field — Frazier circles under it, two-hand snag. Two down. FO

[01:12:06] HALLIDAY: Sheets, a full count — swings late, ball called outside, and Sheets himself gives the mask-tap sign. The newsreel boys have another look — and this time the call on the field is confirmed. Strike three! Side retired. Soriano still has his zero through four — looking every bit like Walter Johnson’s second cousin tonight.

▼ BOTTOM 4TH — ANGELS BATTING · PADRES PITCHING

[01:16:01] HALLIDAY: O’Hoppe leads off — two and two, lifts a pop-up behind the bag, Cronenworth calls it off the first baseman and squeezes. One away. PO

[01:18:23] HALLIDAY: Frazier, one and oh — raps a grounder through the left side, Bogaerts stretches, can’t glove it — base hit. Man on first. 1B

[01:19:31] HALLIDAY: Neto up, one and two — takes a knuckler for strike three on the outside black, the umpire rings him up loud. Two away.

[01:23:00] HALLIDAY: Mike Trout. A full count — three and two — and the knuckler floats wide! Ball four! Trout trots to first, Frazier trots to second, and Schanuel steps in with two in scoring position. BB

[01:26:48] HALLIDAY: Schanuel, one and two — chops a grounder into left field for a base hit! Gavin Sheets charges, throws home — but no chance, Frazier scores standing! Trout chugs into second, Schanuel on at first. Four to nothing! 1B

[01:27:15] SFX: [CROWD CHANT — RALLY MONKEY VIDEO]

[01:27:45] HALLIDAY: And that brings the San Diego manager out of the dugout with one hand raised high — he has seen enough of the knuckleballer tonight. Mr. Waldron’s night is done.

🔄 Pitching change — new pitcher: David Morgan

[01:30:00] HALLIDAY: A right-hander named David Morgan, bullpen man, takes the warm-up tosses. Jo Adell steps in with two aboard.

[01:31:10] HALLIDAY: Morgan two and two to Adelland there’s a line drive, deep to center! Merrill racing back — it splits the gap — off the wall! 2B

[01:31:20] HALLIDAY: Trout scores, Schanuel right behind him — Adell pulls into second standing up with a two-base hit! Six to nothing, Angels! The Rally Monkey is doing back-flips, folks! FO

[01:31:50] SFX: [CROWD — SUSTAINED ROAR, THUNDERSTIX]

[01:33:58] HALLIDAY: Moncada, who started this whole business with that wallop in the second — two and two — and he takes a curve on the outside corner for strike three! Punched out looking. Side retired, but the Angels have their half-dozen. Padres nothing, Angels six, and this one is starting to look like a laugher.

▲ TOP 5TH — PADRES BATTING · ANGELS PITCHING

[01:37:42] HALLIDAY: A soft ocean breeze now, the temperature dropping into the upper sixties, and those palm trees beyond center silhouetted against a violet sky. Castellanos steps in — full count — swings through a breaking ball in the dirt! One away. K

[01:40:16] HALLIDAY: France on the first pitch — dribbles one back to the mound, Soriano fields it himself, soft toss to Schanuel — two away. GO

[01:40:48] HALLIDAY: Campusano at the plate — Soriano falls behind four and one — a base on balls. Man on, two out. BB

[01:42:26] HALLIDAY: Cronenworth with the full count — lifts a lazy fly to left field, Frazier gathers it in. Side retired. Soriano through five, not a run across, my scorecard shows eight strikeouts and four bases on balls. A gem of an outing. FO

Peraza trots in, Lowe circles the bases with a grin to the bench!

[01:50:55] HALLIDAY: Padres nothing, Angels eight — and Angel Stadium is a madhouse, the big “A” halo glowing against the night sky, forty-four thousand and change singing along with the organ!

[01:51:43] HALLIDAY: O’Hoppe steps in — Morgan has lost the zone — four and two, ball four, free pass. Man on first, one away. BB

[01:56:29] HALLIDAY: Frazier, oh and one — hits a bullet that never got up — Merrill races in and spears it on the run. Two gone. LO

[01:58:50] HALLIDAY: Trout walks on four straight — the bases are once again loaded — and the San Diego skipper has seen enough of Mr. Morgan. BB

🔄 Pitching change — new pitcher: Wandy Peralta

[02:04:15] HALLIDAY: The left-hander Wandy Peralta comes in to face Schanuel with the sacks filled — one and two — ball four called outside! — but the San Diego dugout asks the electric umpire to check — and by gum, the photoelectric zone overturns the call! [02:16:02] HALLIDAY: Bogaerts, four and one — Soriano misses high, base on balls. Two aboard, two out — and the manager of the home side walks slowly out to the hill to shake his starter’s hand. A heck of a night’s work for Mr. Soriano. BB

🔄 Pitching change — new pitcher: Chase Silseth

[02:20:37] HALLIDAY: Chase Silseth, a young right-hander, takes over with two on, two out. First pitch — Sheets rifles a line drive to right field but it’s right at Lowe, who gloves it in front of his numbers. Side retired on one pitch! A clean handoff, and the shutout is preserved.

THE FINAL OUT

[03:06:34] SFX: [FINAL-OUT CROWD REACTION — SUSTAINED CHEER, THUNDERSTIX, ORGAN FANFARE]

[03:06:44] HALLIDAY: And that does it, ladies and gentlemen — the ball game is over! Final score from Anaheim: the San Diego Padres, zero — your Los Angeles Angels, eight! A complete whitewash on the first-place club!

[03:06:58] HALLIDAY: Your winning pitcher tonight, the right-hander José Soriano, five and two-thirds innings of shut-out ball, two hits, four free passes, and eight strikeouts — his season earned-run figure now a microscopic zero point two eight. The losing pitcher, Matt Waldron, three and two-thirds, eight hits, six earned runs — a rough Friday on the knuckle-ball circuit. No save required — not on a night like this one.

[03:07:30] HALLIDAY: Stars of the ball game, as I saw them from up here in the press box: that young José Soriano on the hill, carrying his shutout through five-plus with the poise of a ten-year man. Yoán Moncada, who broke the ice in the second with a tape-measure wallop to dead center. Nolan Schanuel with two base knocks and a run batted in. And young Josh Lowe, who put the exclamation point on it with a two-run poke into the right-field pavilion in the fifth. Thirteen hits, eight runs — the Halos have knocked the front-runners back a peg and then some.

[03:08:10] HALLIDAY: So from Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, where forty-four thousand five hundred and fifty-one customers are filing out into the warm California night, and the big “A” halo still burns above the palms — this is Howard “Hap” Halliday thanking you for listening, wishing you a pleasant evening, and reminding you that there is a ball game tomorrow afternoon, same clubs, same station. Until then, friends — good night from the Coast!
